Games Workshop's annual celebration of all things Warhammer 40,000 delivered the goods this week. Warhammer Skulls 2026 — the 10th edition of the franchise's gaming showcase — was packed with announcements across multiple titles, and if you're a 40K fan, there's a lot to get excited about.

Darktide Gets the Skitarii

The biggest news for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide players: the Skitarii class is officially coming on June 23, 2026. These are cybernetic soldiers of the Adeptus Mechanicus — tech-obsessed warriors who blur the line between human and machine.

Fatshark is giving the class a proper skill tree with multiple role paths, so you can build your Skitarii around different combat styles. It's not just a new skin; it's a genuinely new playstyle that should shake up squad compositions for dedicated players.

Darktide has come a long way since its rough launch, and the Skitarii addition feels like a reward for the community that stuck with it through the early struggles.

Space Marine 2: The Purgation Update

Space Marine 2 continues its impressive post-launch support with the Purgation Update, which adds:

  • A brand new co-op mission set on Kadaku
  • Rapid-fire bolt carbine sidearms — new tactical options for every class
  • Additional Heroic weapons and armor sets to chase

Space Marine 2 was one of 2024's surprise hits, selling millions of copies and bringing a whole new audience to the 40K universe. Saber Interactive has been consistent with updates, and Purgation looks like another solid drop for a game that's aged well.

Dawn of War IV Gets a Date

For RTS fans, the real jaw-dropper at Skulls 2026 was a release date reveal for Dawn of War IV. The franchise has been dormant since Dawn of War III's commercial disappointment, and seeing it return is genuinely exciting for fans of Warhammer strategy games.

Details are still limited beyond the date, but just seeing the series alive again is enough to generate serious hype. The community has been waiting for this since DOW3 underdelivered in 2017.

The Bigger Picture

What Skulls 2026 really demonstrates is how seriously Games Workshop is taking its gaming arm right now. Between the massive success of Space Marine 2, the ongoing life of Darktide, and a new Dawn of War on the horizon, the Warhammer gaming universe has arguably never been in better shape.

The franchise used to be treated as a license-mill — slap the skull iconography on a mid-tier game, collect royalties. That era looks thoroughly over. The current wave of Warhammer titles are genuinely good games that attract players who've never touched a miniature in their lives.

If you haven't been paying attention to the 40K gaming space, Skulls 2026 is a good reminder that it's worth watching. June 23 can't come soon enough for Darktide fans.
