GTA 6 Drops May 26 — Console-Only at Launch, PC TBD

It is finally happening. Rockstar Games has officially locked in May 26, 2026 as the launch date for Grand Theft Auto VI, and the gaming world is losing it. The game drops on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — and if you are a PC player, you are going to need some patience.

Console-First, PC Later

Rockstar confirmed that GTA 6 will launch exclusively on consoles at first, with no PC version announced for launch day. The studio has not given a specific timeframe for the PC release, just a vague "to be announced."

This is not entirely surprising — Rockstar pulled the same move with GTA 5, which launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 and did not hit PC until 2015. The strategy makes sense from a business standpoint: consoles represent the bulk of day-one sales, and a staggered release means the game essentially launches twice.

The company's reasoning is straightforward: consoles have the core player base for a launch of this scale, and Rockstar wants to focus resources on delivering the smoothest possible experience on those platforms before tackling the more variable world of PC hardware configurations.

What We Know About the Game

GTA 6 is set in a fictionalized version of Miami and surrounding Florida, a return to the Vice City universe fans have been waiting over two decades for. The trailers showed a massive, living open world with a dual-protagonist setup — including the series' first playable female lead, Lucia.

The scope looks genuinely next-gen. NPCs with more complex routines, social media mechanics baked into the world, and a map that reportedly dwarfs anything Rockstar has built before. The trailers alone broke records when they dropped, and hype has only built since.

The PS5 Pro Angle

With GTA 6 confirmed as a console launch, all eyes are on whether Sony will announce a PS5 Pro bundle. A PlayStation marketing partnership with Rockstar has been widely speculated — the kind of deal that would make a GTA 6 PS5 Pro bundle one of the most coveted gaming packages in years.

Sony has not confirmed anything officially, but the timing lines up perfectly. If you are planning to grab a PS5 Pro anyway, it might be worth holding off to see what gets announced in the weeks leading up to May 26.

Mark Your Calendar

May 26 is a Tuesday, which is the standard game release day in North America. Expect midnight launches at major retailers and digital pre-loads to go live well in advance.

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, is expected to discuss the launch window in detail during their May earnings call — the last major investor check-in before the game ships.

For everyone who has been waiting since the first trailer dropped: the wait is almost over. GTA 6 is three weeks away. May 26. PS5. Xbox Series X|S. PC players, hold tight.
