Indie Pirate Game Windrose Hits 2 Million Sales in 30 Days
Unknown indie studio Kraken Express sold 2 million copies of pirate survival game Windrose in just one month — one of the fastest-selling Early Access launches ever.

Nobody had heard of Kraken Express before April 14, 2026. Now, exactly one month after their pirate survival game Windrose hit Early Access, the Uzbekistan-based studio is sitting on 2 million sales. For context, that's faster than most AAA games reach that milestone.
How Fast Is 2 Million in 30 Days?
Absurdly fast. Windrose crossed 1 million sales in just six days after launch, then hit 1.5 million by late April, and now sits at 2 million as of May 2026. For an unknown indie team making their debut game, that's not just impressive — it's unprecedented in the Early Access space.
To put it in perspective: Subnautica 2 just broke Steam records this week with 425,000 concurrent players at launch. Windrose, a game most people had never heard of before April, has sold five times more copies in the same timeframe. Different metrics, yes — but the velocity tells the story.
So What Is Windrose?
Windrose is an open-world pirate survival game for PC. You sail, you explore, you loot, you build — the core loop that pirate game fans have been begging for since Sea of Thieves launched in 2018 (and went in a very different direction). The game features:
- Fully destructible ship combat with physics-based cannon fire
- A procedurally generated archipelago with hidden treasures and sea monsters
- Base building on claimed islands
- Solo and co-op play up to four players
- A deep crafting system for weapons, sails, and ship upgrades
It's currently in Early Access at around $25, which helps explain the volume — lower price point, massive pent-up demand for a quality pirate game, and strong word-of-mouth from streamers who picked it up in the first week.
What's Coming Next
Kraken Express isn't resting. The studio has already announced their next major content update — the Ashlands biome — is in full production. The Ashlands will add:
- A new volcanic island chain with unique exploration challenges
- New enemy factions and sea creatures
- Expanded crafting materials and ship upgrades
- A new questline tied to the biome's lore
No release date yet, but the studio has been communicating actively with the community on Steam and Discord, which is exactly what you want to see from an Early Access developer riding this kind of momentum.
Why This Matters Beyond the Numbers
Windrose's success is a signal. The gaming market has been saturated with live-service shooters, battle royales, and massive open-world RPGs. What players clearly still want is a focused, well-crafted game that does one thing really well — in this case, make you feel like a pirate.
The indie Early Access model works when developers are transparent, responsive, and actually deliver on their promises. If Kraken Express keeps this up through 1.0, Windrose could become one of the defining indie success stories of 2026 — right up there with Subnautica 2 and the continued dominance of Stardew Valley-style games.
Should You Buy It?
If pirate games are your thing, absolutely. Two million people can't all be wrong, and the Steam reviews are sitting at Very Positive. Just go in knowing it's Early Access — there will be bugs, missing features, and rough edges. But the core loop is apparently very, very good.
Windrose is available now on Steam for PC. The Ashlands update has no release date yet but is actively in development.
