PlayStation Plus Raises Prices Again — Here's What Changed

Sony just made your gaming subscription a little more expensive. PlayStation Plus prices went up again effective May 20, 2026, with the entry-level 1-month plan now hitting $10.99 USD — and the increases don't stop there. Multiple tiers and international regions are affected, making this one of the more widespread pricing moves Sony has made in recent memory.

Which Plans Got More Expensive?

The price hike touches all three PS Plus tiers — Essential, Extra, and Premium. The 1-month Essential plan is the most visible change at $10.99, but the annual plans are also creeping up. Sony hasn't published a single clean breakdown yet, but users across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia are already seeing the new pricing reflected in the PlayStation Store.

If you're on an active annual subscription, you're insulated for now. The new rates kick in at renewal time, so you have a window to decide whether to keep paying or jump ship.

Why Is Sony Doing This (Again)?

This isn't Sony's first rodeo with PS Plus price increases. Back in 2022 they raised prices globally, citing rising development and operating costs. The same reasoning applies here — game production budgets have exploded, server infrastructure isn't getting cheaper, and Sony's first-party output for PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers has grown substantially.

There's also the competitive angle. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate has been hovering in a similar price range, and both services are locked in a slow-burn arms race for subscribers. Raising prices might feel like a risk, but Sony's betting the catalog — Spider-Man, God of War, Returnal, and the growing PS5 lineup — is strong enough to justify it.

Is It Still Worth It?

That depends entirely on how much you use it. Let's break it down:

  • Essential — You're basically paying for online multiplayer and a handful of monthly freebies. At $10.99/month it's getting harder to justify if you're not a heavy online player.
  • Extra — The game catalog is the real draw here. If you're regularly playing from the library of 400+ titles, the value math still works out.
  • Premium — Cloud streaming, classic PS1/PS2/PS3 titles, and game trials round out the top tier. If you're into retro PlayStation history, this one's a sleeper hit.

The honest answer? If you play online multiplayer daily and dip into the catalog monthly, PS Plus Extra still offers decent value even at the new price point. If you're subscribing out of habit and mostly playing a handful of titles you already own, now might be the time to run the numbers.

What Should You Do Right Now?

A couple of practical moves worth considering:

  • Stack time before renewal — If your sub is expiring soon, check if any retailers are still selling 12-month cards at the old price. Physical cards and third-party codes don't always update instantly.
  • Audit your tier — Are you paying for Premium but only using Essential features? Downgrading could offset the hike entirely.
  • Watch for bundles — Sony often rolls out promotional pricing around major releases. With multiple big titles on the horizon, a bundle deal isn't out of the question.

Price increases are never fun, but Sony's been building toward this. The PlayStation Plus library has grown, the infrastructure has improved, and the service is genuinely better than it was two years ago. Whether that growth is worth the extra few dollars a month is a personal call — but at least now you know what you're working with.
