007 First Light Drops Tomorrow — IO Interactive's Bond Game Is Here
IO Interactive, the studio behind Hitman, launches 007 First Light tomorrow on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC — a James Bond origin story five years in the making.

Tomorrow is the day Bond fans have been waiting for. 007 First Light, the big-budget James Bond origin story from IO Interactive, officially launches on May 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
If you know IO Interactive, you know they're the studio that perfected the modern stealth sandbox with the Hitman World of Assassination trilogy. Now they're turning that expertise toward the world's most famous spy — and honestly, it feels like a perfect match.
Bond, Before the Number
007 First Light tells an original story set before Bond earns his famous 00 designation. You're playing as a 26-year-old James Bond, voiced by Patrick Gibson, still rough around the edges and figuring out how to be a spy. Think less tuxedo, more getting punched in the face in a parking garage.
IO drew from Ian Fleming's original novels and the long-running film series to build out the story, so it feels grounded in Bond lore without being tied down by any specific movie continuity. Fresh start, familiar world.
Stealth, Action, and Gadgets Galore
Gameplay-wise, expect something that feels like Hitman's DNA mixed with a more action-forward approach:
- Stealth takedowns and social infiltration mechanics
- Gadget-based problem solving (Bond's toolkit plays a big role)
- Globe-trotting missions across multiple countries
- A cinematic presentation with heavy emphasis on narrative
The balance between letting you go loud versus staying quiet looks like it leans more toward player choice than the Hitman games — which were almost surgically stealth-focused. Early previews describe 007 First Light as more of a narrative action-adventure with stealth options rather than a pure stealth game.
The Theme Song Is a Big Deal
One detail that's been getting serious buzz in the weeks leading up to launch: the game's theme song, also titled First Light, was composed by David Arnold. If that name rings a bell, it should — Arnold scored five Bond films, from GoldenEye through Quantum of Solace. His return to the franchise (even in game form) is a genuinely exciting moment for series fans.
The song itself has been described as very much in the classic Bond tradition — orchestral, dramatic, and with a vocal performance that would fit right alongside the iconic film themes.
Years in the Making
IO Interactive first announced the Bond game back in November 2020, right after they split with Square Enix and went fully independent. Development kicked into high gear after Hitman 3 shipped in early 2021. That's five-plus years of work on this thing.
The full reveal came in June 2025, and since then the hype has been building steadily. Early hands-on previews have been genuinely positive — reviewers are calling it one of the most ambitious single-player games of the year so far.
What About Switch 2?
If you're a Nintendo fan, there's good news and slightly delayed news. A Switch 2 version is confirmed but won't hit on launch day — IO Interactive has committed to a 2026 release for that version without locking in a specific date yet. For now, it's a PS5/Xbox/PC launch.
Should You Play It?
If you've been waiting for a proper AAA Bond game since GoldenEye or the Brosnan-era titles, 007 First Light looks like the real deal. IO Interactive knows how to build a world around a single stylish operative, and they've had five years to get this right.
It drops tomorrow, May 27. Set a reminder — this one is worth day-one attention.
