007 First Light: IO Interactive's Bond Game Drops May 27

The studio behind the Hitman trilogy is two weeks away from releasing what might be the best James Bond game in decades. 007 First Light drops on May 27 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC — and everything IO Interactive has shown so far suggests they have absolutely nailed it.

A Bond Origin Story Like No Other

First Light is not a movie tie-in. It is a completely original Bond story focused on how an audacious young man earns his licence to kill and becomes the legendary 007.

When you first meet Bond, he is a Royal Navy crewman on a mission in Iceland. Things go sideways fast — missiles take down two helicopters and Bond finds himself stranded on a remote coastline. The 00 program gets reinstated, and your first mission as 007 is to track down rogue agent 009, who is trying to evade capture.

It is a tight, focused premise that lets IO build Bond from scratch — their version, not a film adaptation. That creative freedom should show.

Play It Your Way — Spy Style

IO Interactive made their name with Hitman, and that DNA is all over how First Light handles player choice. You can approach missions in completely different ways:

  • Go silent — disguises, hacking tools, eavesdropping on guard conversations
  • Use your charm — talk your way past obstacles with dialogue choices and bluffing
  • Go loud — gunfights, car chases, hand-to-hand combat

Unlike Hitman, the emphasis is on being a spy rather than an assassin — infiltration, investigation, and intelligence gathering come first. IO has added RPG-style systems, gadget upgrade trees, and larger sandbox mission areas that reward exploration.

Hands-on impressions from the PlayStation Blog describe a game that feels cohesive rather than scattered — stealth, spectacle, and style all coexisting naturally.

Lana Del Rey. Lenny Kravitz. Yes, Really.

The casting here deserves its own mention. Lana Del Rey performs the official theme song, titled simply "First Light," produced by David Arnold — the composer behind several classic Bond film soundtracks. Meanwhile, Lenny Kravitz portrays the primary antagonist, Bawma.

That combination of genuine talent in the music and performance departments signals IO and the Bond franchise are treating this as serious creative work, not a licensed cash grab. The cinematic quality bar looks high.

Platforms and the Switch 2 Situation

007 First Light launches May 27 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC. The Nintendo Switch 2 version was delayed and is now targeting Q3 2026.

If you are on Switch 2 exclusively, you will need to wait a few more months. Everyone else is good for launch day.

Could This Be Game of the Year?

GameSpot has already called it a potential Game of the Year contender — and that is not a bar many games clear in any given year, let alone a year as packed as 2026.

IO Interactive has a track record of building intricate, rewarding game worlds that get better the more you explore them. If First Light brings that same depth to the Bond fantasy — stealth, gadgets, glamour, and danger — it could easily be one of the year's best.

Two weeks to go. 007 First Light releases May 27, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Windows).
