The Walking Dead: Aftermath Is a Free Roguelite Coming This Summer
Ares Interactive and AMC reveal The Walking Dead: Aftermath — a free-to-play roguelite for iOS and Android starring Rick, Daryl, and Michonne. Out this summer.

The Walking Dead is getting a new game this summer, and it's not what most people were expecting. The Walking Dead: Aftermath is a free-to-play roguelite developed by Ares Interactive's Swift Games studio — the same team behind the hit mobile title Heroes vs Hordes — and it's coming to iOS and Android.
The announcement dropped on April 28, 2026, from Ares Interactive and AMC Networks. It's the first game set in the Walking Dead universe to go the roguelite route, and from what's been revealed so far, it looks like a solid fit for the franchise.
Who You'll Be Playing As
This isn't some spin-off with random characters. You'll be stepping into the shoes of iconic survivors from The Walking Dead — Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, and Michonne are all confirmed for launch. Each run, you pick your survivor and push into increasingly dangerous territory, fighting walkers, hostile enemies, and powerful bosses along the way.
The game mixes high-intensity roguelite action with survivor strategy and base-building progression. Between runs, you're upgrading your crew and prepping for whatever comes next.
Familiar Locations
Campaign missions take you through locations that fans of the show will immediately recognize:
- Hershel's Farm
- Woodbury
- Alexandria
It's a smart way to pull in existing fans. If you watched the show and remember what went down at each of those places, playing through them in a roguelite context is going to hit differently than just a random post-apocalyptic map.
It's Free — What's the Catch?
It's free-to-play, which means there will be some form of monetization. The game hasn't detailed its business model yet, but given that it's from the Heroes vs Hordes studio, expect cosmetics and possibly some form of premium currency. The core gameplay loop should be accessible without spending.
Ares is promising more details — character reveals, gameplay features, and pre-registration timing — in the coming weeks. No exact launch date has been confirmed yet beyond "Summer 2026."
More Platforms Could Be Coming
The announcement specifically says iOS and Android "with additional platforms to be announced at a later date." That leaves the door open for a console or PC version down the line. Given the IP's reach, it wouldn't be a surprise to see it land on more platforms if the mobile launch performs well.
Worth Keeping an Eye On
The Walking Dead has had a mixed history in games — the Telltale series was brilliant, and some of the other attempts have been forgettable. But a roguelite built by a studio that clearly knows the genre, set in one of the most recognized post-apocalyptic universes out there, with beloved characters at the center? That has real potential.
If you're a fan of either Walking Dead or roguelites, this one is worth watching. Pre-registration details are coming soon.
