Street Fighter 6 Just Broke a Guinness World Record at EVO Japan

Street Fighter 6 just made history. At EVO Japan 2026, held May 1–3 in Tokyo, the game attracted 7,168 competitors — officially certified by Guinness World Records as the largest single fighting game tournament ever held. To put that in perspective: SF6 had more entrants than all eleven other games at the event combined.

That's not a typo. One game. More players than the entire rest of the lineup. Put together.

A Record Built on Two Years of Smart Decisions

Street Fighter 6 launched in June 2023, and Capcom has been methodical ever since. Consistent balance patches, a steady flow of DLC characters, and a surprisingly accessible modern control scheme that brought in players who'd never touched a fighting game before. The result is a community that's grown, not shrunk, two years in.

The fighting game community has always had strong local scenes, but translating that into tournament numbers this massive requires something special. SF6 has it — and EVO Japan just made it official.

Who Won?

With 7,168 players in the bracket, someone had to come out on top. That honor went to Eisuke Yamaguchi of ZETA DIVISION, who took the trophy playing as Mai. It's a big result for both the player and the character, and you can bet the clips are already everywhere.

Other Announcements From the Weekend

EVO Japan wasn't just about Street Fighter. The event doubled as a showcase for the broader FGC, with some big reveals alongside the record-breaking:

  • Tekken 8 dropped a new gameplay trailer for Kunimitsu, with her joining the roster on May 28
  • King of Fighters XV announced a major balance update arriving in July 2026 — all 61 characters are getting adjusted
  • Under Night In-Birth 2 showed off a brand-new character reveal

Good week to be a fighting game fan.

What This Means for the FGC

Esports has had a rough few years — shrinking prize pools, organizations folding, viewership dips. But the fighting game community runs on a different engine. It's grassroots, passionate, and deeply tied to live events where the energy in the room is half the experience.

A Guinness record at EVO Japan is a signal that the FGC is doing more than surviving — it's thriving. And Street Fighter 6 is the engine driving that right now.

If you've been sleeping on SF6's ranked or local tournament scene, this might be your sign to wake up.
