Starfield Hits PS5 — And DualSense Support Changes Everything

After years as an Xbox and PC exclusive, Starfield has finally made the jump to PlayStation 5 — and it brings full DualSense support along for the ride. If you've been holding out on Bethesda's massive space RPG, now might be the right time to dive in.

What Took So Long?

When Starfield launched in September 2023, it was positioned as a crown jewel of the Xbox ecosystem — a system seller that would give players a reason to stay on Microsoft's platforms. But things have changed a lot since then.

Microsoft has been systematically releasing its formerly exclusive titles on PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Grounded all made the jump before Starfield did. At this point, the writing was on the wall — it was only a matter of when, not if.

That when is now. Starfield is available on PS5, and it's a robust port that doesn't feel like an afterthought.

DualSense Makes a Real Difference

This is the part that actually matters for anyone who's already played Starfield on Xbox or PC. The PS5 version takes full advantage of the DualSense controller, and it adds a surprising layer of immersion to a game that was already one of Bethesda's most ambitious projects.

  • Adaptive triggers resist differently depending on what weapon you're firing — there's a distinct pull when drawing back a sniper rifle versus spraying an SMG
  • Haptic feedback communicates your ship's thruster intensity during space travel and the crunch of gravel underfoot on alien planets
  • Touchpad is used for quick-access navigation in menus and the starmap
  • Controller speaker pipes in subtle ambient audio — comms chatter, scanner blips, and environmental sounds

These aren't gimmicks. After a few hours, flying through space while feeling your ship's engines in your hands becomes genuinely satisfying.

What You're Actually Getting

Starfield is a massive game — we're talking hundreds of planets, dozens of handcrafted cities and outposts, and a main storyline that can easily run 40+ hours. The PS5 version includes all post-launch content and updates that have been added since the original release, meaning you're getting a considerably more polished experience than what launched in 2023.

The game runs smoothly on PS5, hitting a consistent performance target that makes exploring its vast universe feel fluid. Load times — which were a point of criticism at launch on other platforms — are noticeably faster on PS5's SSD.

Is It Worth Picking Up?

If you've never played Starfield, this is genuinely the best version available. The DualSense additions are well-implemented, the content library is now fully stocked, and Bethesda has had nearly three years to patch and refine the experience.

If you played it at launch on Xbox or PC and bounced off, it's a harder sell. The PS5 port doesn't change the fundamental design — it's still a Bethesda RPG with all the exploration and system depth that comes with it. But if controller feel was part of what held you back, the DualSense implementation might be enough to bring you back.

Either way, the era of Xbox exclusives staying exclusive is clearly over. Starfield on PS5 is just the latest confirmation of that.
