REPLACED Is Out on Game Pass — Critics Are Calling It a Hidden Gem

After five years in development and multiple delays, REPLACED is finally out — and it was absolutely worth the wait. The debut game from Sad Cat Studios dropped on April 14 across Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store), and Xbox Game Pass, and early reviews are painting a very flattering picture of one of gaming's most visually ambitious indie titles.

What Is REPLACED?

At its core, REPLACED is a 2.5D cinematic action platformer set in a gritty, retro-futuristic cyberpunk world. You play as R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence that finds itself trapped inside a human body — navigating a crumbling dystopia filled with corrupt authority, underground resistance fighters, and neon-soaked alleyways.

The game takes roughly 10 to 13 hours to complete, and every one of those hours is drenched in atmosphere. Think something between Dead Cells, Blade Runner, and a graphic novel you can't put down.

What Critics Are Saying

The early verdict? Mostly glowing, with a few caveats.

"An absolute recommendation for $20 — my current game of the year candidate."

Reviewers consistently praise the game's pixel art visuals, which look stunning in motion — fluid character animations, layered parallax backgrounds, and some genuinely jaw-dropping lighting effects. The cyberpunk world feels alive and cohesive in a way that a lot of bigger-budget games fail to pull off.

The story also gets high marks. R.E.A.C.H.'s journey is described as compelling and emotionally resonant — not just a backdrop for punching robots, but an actual narrative worth following through to the end.

Where critics pump the brakes slightly is on technical execution. A handful of reviews mention visibility issues in certain platforming sections and combat sequences — moments where the gorgeous visuals can work against you, making it hard to read the environment or incoming attacks. Most reviewers expect this to improve with post-launch patches.

Combat and Gameplay

REPLACED chains fluid melee strikes with satisfying ranged attacks. Combat is fast and responsive — it rewards players who learn enemy patterns rather than button-mashing their way through fights. Think of it as a more grounded, less rogue-lite take on what Dead Cells does with combat flow.

Exploration is equally strong. Running, climbing, and dashing through crumbling industrial districts and neon-drenched alleys feels great, with the game constantly introducing new environments that keep things visually fresh.

Where to Get It

If you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, REPLACED is available right now at no additional cost — which makes it an absolute no-brainer to try. On PC, the game is priced at $19.99 on Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store.

After one of gaming's longest-running development cycles (the game was first announced at the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase back in 2021), it's genuinely great to see REPLACED land so well. Sad Cat Studios has made a hell of a first impression.

Verdict

If you're a fan of cyberpunk aesthetics, tight action-platformer gameplay, or just want something that looks absolutely jaw-dropping on your screen — REPLACED deserves your time. The minor rough edges don't take away from what is clearly a passion project executed with rare artistic vision. It's one of the best indie launches of 2026 so far.
