PS5 Price Hike Is Here: Disc Edition Now $649, Pro Hits $899

If you’ve been on the fence about picking up a PS5, your window just got more expensive. Sony’s PS5 price increases are now in effect, and the hikes are significant across every model in the lineup.

The New PS5 Prices in the US

Here’s what you’re looking at as of early April 2026:

  • PS5 Disc Edition: $649.99 (up from $549.99 — a $100 increase)
  • PS5 Digital Edition: $599.99 (up from $499.99 — also +$100)
  • PS5 Pro: $899.99 (the steepest jump in the lineup)

The increases aren’t limited to North America. UK buyers are paying up to £90 more depending on the model, and similar hikes are hitting European markets too.

Why Is Sony Raising Prices?

Sony’s official explanation points to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” That’s a bit vague, but industry analysts have filled in the blanks: expiring component price protections and rising memory costs are the main culprits. The deals Sony locked in years ago to keep hardware costs stable are winding down, and those savings are no longer being passed to consumers.

It’s also worth noting that Sony isn’t alone here. Microsoft and Nintendo have both raised hardware prices in 2026 as well. The era of sub-$500 current-gen consoles appears to be over — at least for now.

Bad Timing: The Announcement Hit the Same Week as Two Big Launches

The optics weren’t great. Sony’s price hike news broke the same week that Starfield and Hades 2 both launched on PS5 — two games that could have driven console sales. Instead, the conversation shifted to sticker shock. Not ideal PR.

What This Means for Gamers

If you already own a PS5, nothing changes. But if you’re shopping for one, here’s the practical reality:

  • At $649.99, the disc edition is now priced closer to a mid-tier gaming PC than an entry-level console
  • The PS5 Pro at $899.99 is firmly in premium territory — comparable to a solid gaming laptop
  • Xbox Series X at its current price still offers a slightly more competitive entry point, especially with Game Pass factored in

Is It Still Worth Buying?

That depends on your situation. The PS5 has a genuinely excellent exclusive library — Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Astro Bot, and now Hades 2 and Starfield joining the platform. If those games are your priority, the value is still there. But at $649+, it’s a harder sell to new buyers who are just getting into the ecosystem.

For those on the fence, keeping an eye on bundles or refurbished options might be the smarter move while the dust settles.

The Big Picture

Gaming hardware is getting more expensive across the board, and there’s no sign of that trend reversing soon. Sony raising prices on its most popular console is a significant moment for the industry — one that could push more players toward subscription services and PC gaming as the cost of entry into console gaming climbs higher.
