Last Chance: GTA 5 Leaves Xbox Game Pass on April 15

Last Chance: GTA 5 Leaves Xbox Game Pass on April 15

If you've been meaning to replay Grand Theft Auto V on Game Pass, the clock is ticking. Microsoft has confirmed that GTA 5 will be removed from Xbox Game Pass on April 15, 2026 — that's two days from now. Once it's gone, you'll need to own a copy to play.

What's Actually Leaving

GTA 5 isn't the only title heading for the exit. Four other games are also being dropped from the service on April 15:

  • Grand Theft Auto V (Console, Cloud, and PC — both Enhanced and Legacy editions)
  • Ashen
  • Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
  • My Little Pony: A Zephyr Heights Mystery

Of the five, GTA 5's departure is by far the biggest story. The other titles are solid games in their own right, but nothing with the cultural footprint of Rockstar's open-world juggernaut.

Why Is GTA 5 Leaving Again?

This isn't the first time GTA 5 has cycled off Game Pass. The game has appeared and disappeared from the service multiple times — rotating on in 2020, 2021, 2023, and again in April 2025. Each stay has lasted roughly three to six months before it vanishes.

The timing this time around feels more deliberate. GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, 2026, and pulling GTA 5 from subscription services ahead of that release is a smart business move. It puts a gentle pressure on players who want to revisit Los Santos to actually buy the game rather than stream it for free — while also building anticipation for the sequel.

Rockstar has had GTA 5 available on Game Pass for a full year at this point. That's a generous run. But with the franchise's biggest moment in over a decade approaching, it makes sense to tighten things up.

What About GTA 6?

As of April 2026, GTA 6 remains on track for its November 19 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A viral rumor earlier this month claimed the game had a broken save system and would face a third delay, but Kotaku confirmed directly with Rockstar's developers that the claim was completely made up.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has also publicly backed the November date. A new gameplay trailer is widely expected sometime between now and the summer, so there's plenty more GTA 6 content on the horizon to keep fans busy.

PC players are still waiting on official confirmation for their platform, though given GTA 5's history of eventually landing on PC, few are worried.

What Should You Do Before April 15?

If you're a Game Pass subscriber and you haven't finished GTA 5 yet — or just want to knock out some remaining achievements — you've got a narrow window. Here are your options:

  • Play now: Fire it up before April 15 and squeeze in whatever you can.
  • Buy it: GTA 5 goes on sale regularly on both Xbox and PlayStation stores. It's worth owning outright given how much content is packed into it.
  • Wait for GTA 6: If you've already played through the story, honestly, you might just want to save that energy for November.

Either way, the free ride ends Tuesday. Don't say we didn't warn you.

The Bigger Picture

GTA 5's removal is a reminder of how subscription gaming works in practice. Games rotate in and out, and no title — not even one of the best-selling games in history — sticks around forever. If you're a Game Pass subscriber, it's worth keeping an eye on the monthly "leaving soon" lists, because the next classic to disappear might be one you actually care about.

For now, Los Santos is still yours until midnight on April 14. Make it count.
