GTA 6 Launches May 26 — Here's What You Need to Know

It's actually happening. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on May 26, 2026 — four days from now — and the gaming world is collectively holding its breath. After years of leaks, speculation, and one of the most-watched trailers in internet history, Rockstar's magnum opus is almost here.

Take-Two Interactive's earnings call on May 21 was the industry's official moment of truth, and it delivered: no more delays, no surprises. The date is locked. Preloads are live on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and if you haven't hit that download button yet, now's the time — the game is reportedly around 150GB.

What We Know About the Game

GTA VI is set in Vice City and the surrounding state of Leonida, a fictional take on Florida. It's the first GTA to feature a playable female protagonist — Lucia — alongside Jason, and the two are pulling off heists together in a story that Rockstar says is more personal and character-driven than anything in the series.

The world is supposed to be massive. Rockstar has talked up a living, breathing economy where businesses open and close, NPCs have routines that evolve, and the online component — GTA Online's successor — is being positioned as a long-term platform rather than an afterthought.

Platforms and PC

Here's the one thing that might sting: PC is not in the launch lineup. GTA VI releases exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on May 26. A PC version is expected, but Rockstar hasn't given a window — and if GTA V's history is anything to go by, you might be waiting 18 months to two years.

For console players, the base game is $69.99. A Rockstar Edition with extra in-game cash and bonuses is available at $89.99.

Why This Is Such a Big Deal

GTA V launched in 2013 and went on to sell over 200 million copies. It's been re-released on three console generations. GTA Online has generated billions in revenue. GTA VI has a lot to live up to — and based on what Rockstar has shown, it looks like they've built something that could redefine open-world gaming again.

The online ecosystem is where the real money will flow. Rockstar's model — free updates, in-game currency, creator tools — turned GTA Online into a decade-long cash machine. Expect VI Online to go even harder.

What to Do Before Launch Day

  • Preload now — available on both consoles, unlocks at midnight in your region on May 26
  • Clear your schedule — seriously, just block off the weekend
  • Check your storage — you'll need at least 150GB free
  • Avoid Twitter/Reddit on launch day if you care about spoilers — this will be a spoiler warzone

Four days. Whether you've been following every trailer frame-by-frame or just want to see what the hype is about, May 26 is going to be one of those gaming moments people talk about for years. Don't say we didn't warn you.
