Forza Horizon 6 Takes You to Japan on May 19 — Here's What to Expect

Playground Games is bringing the Forza Horizon festival to Japan, and the release date is closer than you think. Forza Horizon 6 launches on May 19, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC — and if you're a Game Pass subscriber, you're getting it at no extra cost on day one.

After a Mediterranean road trip in FH5, the series is heading somewhere genuinely exciting. Here's everything you need to know before the festival kicks off.

Release Dates and Early Access

The standard release is May 19 across Xbox Series X|S, Windows (Microsoft Store and Steam), and Game Pass. Premium Edition owners get a four-day head start, jumping in on May 15.

If you've been sitting on the fence about upgrading your edition, that early access window is genuinely worth considering — Horizon launches tend to be social events, and being in on day one (or day negative-four) is part of the fun.

Japan: A Setting That's Been a Long Time Coming

Forza Horizon 6 is set in a stylized version of Japan, with a fictionalized Tokyo as the main hub city. The series has done Spain, Australia, the UK, Mexico, and Colorado — but Japan has been on the community's wishlist for years, and Playground Games is finally delivering it.

The appeal is obvious: winding mountain passes, neon-soaked urban streets, coastal highways, and rural countryside all in one map. The setting is perfect for a Horizon game. Expect cherry blossoms, torii gates, and probably a drift festival or two that fits the locale perfectly.

Game Pass Day One — Yes, Really

Forza Horizon 6 will be available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on release day. That's a big deal. Horizon games are typically massive, $70 releases — getting the full experience through your existing subscription is one of the best value propositions in gaming right now.

If you're not already on Game Pass, this is a strong reason to start a subscription. One month of Game Pass Ultimate costs less than a single game at full price.

PS5 Is Coming — Just Not at Launch

Here's the headline for PlayStation players: Forza Horizon 6 is coming to PS5, though not until later in 2026. Exact timing hasn't been confirmed, but Microsoft has been expanding its first-party titles to PlayStation, and FH6 is part of that strategy.

If you're a PS5-only player, patience will pay off. In the meantime, the PC version via Steam is the most accessible option for non-Xbox owners.

What Playground Games Has Built

Developed by Playground Games with support from Turn 10 Studios, FH6 continues the formula that made the series one of the best open-world racing franchises ever made. Playground has been perfecting this formula for years, and Japan gives them a canvas that's both familiar to car culture fans and visually stunning.

Details on car count, seasonal events, and online features are still rolling out, but the bones are solid. Horizon games don't really miss.

The Bottom Line

May 19 is two weeks away. If you're a Game Pass subscriber, just make sure you've got enough storage cleared out. If you're not, this might finally be the game that pushes you to subscribe — or at least grab the Premium Edition for that May 15 head start.

Japan was always going to be a perfect Horizon setting. We're about to find out if Playground Games stuck the landing.
