FFXIV Fan Fest 2026: Patch 7.5 This Week, Evercold in January

Square Enix just wrapped Fan Festival 2026, and if you missed it, you have some catching up to do. Two massive announcements dropped back to back — one landing this week, one set for early next year — and both are solid reasons to dust off your character if you stepped away from Final Fantasy XIV.

Patch 7.5 — Trail to the Heavens — Drops April 28

The final major content patch of the Dawntrail expansion cycle is almost here. Patch 7.5: Trail to the Heavens launches Monday, April 28, closing out this chapter of the game with a full slate of content.

The headline addition is the Beastmaster job — a new combat role that lets you tame and fight alongside creatures. It plays unlike anything else in the current job lineup, and after years of existing only in limited variant content, it is finally making the jump to the full game.

  • Beastmaster job unlocks and full questline
  • Dawntrail allied society capstone quests
  • New Hildibrand Adventures episodes
  • Free Trial expanded to include Shadowbringers

That last point is huge for new players. Shadowbringers is widely considered one of the best expansion stories in the game, and it is now fully accessible on the Free Trial. If you have friends on the fence about trying FFXIV, April 28 is the perfect nudge.

One more thing: Square Enix confirmed FFXIV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, potentially bringing the game to a whole new audience of portable players.

The Next Expansion: Evercold, January 2027

The bigger bombshell from Fan Fest was the reveal of Evercold, the sixth full expansion for Final Fantasy XIV. It is set in the Fourth Reflection — a parallel world facing total glaciation — and the visuals shown during the keynote are genuinely stunning.

Two new jobs were announced:

  • A new tank job — the aesthetic leans into frost-armored knight territory
  • A new physical ranged DPS — a departure from the usual magical ranged options that players have long requested

Evercold launches in January 2027, giving the dev team a solid runway after Patch 7.5 wraps up the Dawntrail story. That is roughly eight months of anticipation — which, knowing this community, will be filled with theory-crafting, lore deep-dives, and datamined everything the moment the patch drops.

Is Now a Good Time to Come Back?

Dawntrail received a mixed reception early on — some players found the story a slower burn compared to Endwalker. But Square Enix has been methodical about keeping FFXIV healthy, and this one-two punch of a strong patch close-out and a bold new expansion reveal should re-energize the playerbase heading into the second half of 2026.

If you have been on an extended break, the honest answer is yes. Patch 7.5 this week, an expansion reveal to obsess over, and a bigger Free Trial — there is no bad time to log back in, and this is one of the better ones.
