Dataminers and community theorists have spotted several Final Fantasy VII references buried in the Fan Festival promotional teasers, fueling theories about a potential crossover element or at least a major narrative nod to FF7's world. Patch 7.5 Roadmap Also on the Agenda
The expansion isn't the only news dropping at Fanfest. Square Enix quietly updated the FFXIV Patch 7.5 special site just ahead of the keynote, strongly suggesting a full patch roadmap will be announced alongside the expansion reveal.
Patch 7.5 is significant. It's the final major patch of the current Dawntrail expansion cycle, serving as the narrative bridge between where the story is now and whatever 8.0 kicks off with. Players waiting for closure on several Dawntrail storylines should get a clearer picture of the timeline here.
When Is the Next Expansion Coming?
Based on Square Enix's historical release cadence and this year's Fan Festival schedule, the 8.0 expansion isn't arriving anytime soon. Most analysts and community forecasters are pointing to late spring or early summer 2027 as the most realistic window — a longer wait than many hoped.
That patience is somewhat earned, though. Yoshi-P's team has never rushed an expansion, and that discipline is a big reason why FFXIV's community remains one of the most loyal in gaming, even when Dawntrail received a more mixed reception compared to the universally beloved Endwalker.
