Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred — What to Know Before April 28
Blizzard's Lord of Hatred expansion for Diablo IV drops April 28. New class, new region, new endgame — here's everything worth knowing before launch day.

Three days. That's all that stands between you and Blizzard's next massive drop for Diablo IV. The Lord of Hatred expansion hits PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on April 28, and if you've been sitting on the fence about jumping back into Sanctuary, this might be the moment that tips you over.
What Is Lord of Hatred?
Lord of Hatred brings a brand-new story campaign to Diablo IV, picking up the threads left dangling after the base game and the Vessel of Hatred expansion. The expansion centers on Mephisto, one of the three Prime Evils and — as the name makes pretty clear — the literal lord of hatred himself.
Blizzard has been building toward this confrontation since the game launched in 2023. Vessel of Hatred set things in motion. Lord of Hatred is where the payoff happens, and from what Blizzard has shown, it's going to be a meaty one.
New Class, New Region, New Nightmare
Every major Diablo IV expansion has come with a new playable class, and Lord of Hatred is no different. Blizzard is introducing the Riftwalker, a class built around dimensional magic — tearing holes in reality to summon hazards, reposition enemies, and unleash chaos in ways the existing classes can't match.
If you've been burned out on the existing roster, the Riftwalker alone is a solid reason to come back. The playstyle is completely different from anything currently in the game.
The expansion also opens up a new region called the Shattered Realm — a fractured, corrupted version of Sanctuary that exists somewhere between the mortal world and the Burning Hells. Think broken architecture floating in void space, impossible geometry, and enemies that've been twisted by proximity to pure evil. Visually, it's the most striking environment Blizzard has built for Diablo IV so far.
Endgame Gets a Big Overhaul Too
Beyond the story, Lord of Hatred introduces several endgame systems that should keep dedicated players busy for a long time:
- Hatred Rifts — a new high-difficulty activity where you push into increasingly corrupted zones, with scaling rewards and a leaderboard system for competitive players
- Mephisto Shards — a new crafting material tied to the expansion's story that lets you corrupt existing gear with unpredictable but powerful modifiers
- Echoes of Evil — a roguelike-inspired weekly challenge mode with rotating rules and exclusive cosmetics for clearing it
Blizzard has been quietly listening to feedback about Diablo IV's endgame since launch. The systems in Lord of Hatred look like a direct response to what the community has been asking for — more variety, more challenge, more reason to keep grinding after you've hit the level cap.
Free Update for Everyone on April 28
Here's the part that's easy to miss: even if you don't buy the expansion, April 28 comes with a free seasonal update for all Diablo IV players. Season 9 — officially called Season of Corruption — kicks off alongside Lord of Hatred and brings new seasonal mechanics, a fresh battle pass, and balance changes across all classes.
Blizzard has been running these parallel tracks since the game launched. You get something for free, and the expansion deepens the experience if you pay for it. It's a solid model, and it's kept the player base engaged between big content drops.
Is It Worth Buying?
If you enjoyed the base game and Vessel of Hatred, Lord of Hatred is an easy yes. The Riftwalker class alone is worth the price of admission for players who like experimenting with new builds, and the Shattered Realm looks like the kind of environment that'll get a lot of screenshot mileage.
If you dropped off Diablo IV at launch and never came back, this might actually be the best time to return. The game has changed significantly since 2023, and Lord of Hatred is designed as a natural re-entry point with its own self-contained story arc.
Either way, April 28 is shaping up to be a big day in Sanctuary. Get your builds ready.
