Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred Adds Two Classes and a Free Skill Overhaul

Blizzard has officially announced that Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred drops on April 28, 2026, and it might be the biggest thing to hit the game since launch. Two new classes, a brand-new region, and a sweeping skill tree overhaul — and the best part? A chunk of this update is completely free for every player.

Meet the Paladin and the Warlock

The expansion introduces two fresh playable classes to the roster. First is the Paladin, a beloved returning archetype from Diablo II that blends holy power with heavy melee combat. Sacred auras, divine smites, and righteous judgment — classic Paladin fantasy, rebuilt for Diablo IV's modern systems.

The second class is the all-new Warlock, a darker spellcaster who traffics in forbidden magic and soul-consuming abilities. Blizzard hasn't released the full ability breakdown yet, but early previews suggest a high-risk, high-reward playstyle that will appeal to fans of glass cannon builds.

Skovos: A New Region to Explore

Lord of Hatred takes players to Skovos, an entirely new region that expands Sanctuary's map in a major way. Skovos is an archipelago civilization known from Diablo lore — a chain of islands ruled by Amazon warriors, now threatened by demonic forces spilling from the gates of Hell.

The new region brings fresh dungeons, world bosses, side quests, and lore-heavy storylines. If you've been feeling like you've cleared every corner of the base game, Skovos should give you plenty of new ground to cover.

Free Stuff: The Skill Tree Rework

Here's the part that matters even if you don't buy the expansion: every Diablo IV player is getting a complete skill tree rework for all eight classes. Whether you paid for Lord of Hatred or not, your existing characters are getting rebuilt with the new system when the update goes live.

On top of that, the free update includes:

  • A new level cap increase for all players
  • A Loot Filter — finally — so your screen isn't drowning in white drops
  • Seasonal resets and balance changes across the board

Expansion-Exclusive: Horadric Cube and War Plans

Paying customers get access to the Horadric Cube crafting system, a nod to the iconic item from Diablo II that allows players to transmute gear and create unique combinations. It adds a meaningful crafting layer that the base game was sorely missing.

Also expansion-exclusive are War Plans, a new structured endgame progression system designed to give maxed-out characters a clear path forward. No more aimlessly grinding Greater Rifts hoping for a stat upgrade — War Plans provide objectives, milestones, and rewards that feel purposeful.

Should You Buy It?

If you're a Diablo IV regular, Lord of Hatred looks like the update the game has been building toward. The base game's post-launch patches improved things steadily, but a whole new region and two new classes is a different level of commitment from Blizzard.

If you dropped off after Season 1 or 2, the free skill overhaul and loot filter might be reason enough to reinstall before April 28. And the expansion itself, priced in line with previous Blizzard DLC, seems like fair value for what's on offer.

Lord of Hatred launches April 28 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Pre-orders are live now.
