BioShock 4 Has Had a Rough Road — Take-Two's CEO Just Confirmed It

Take-Two's CEO Did Not Hold Back

BioShock 4 has been in development for years — quietly, frustratingly, without a single reveal or release window. This week, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick finally broke his silence, and what he said was surprisingly honest.

When asked about the game's slow progress, Zelnick did not mince words: he is "deeply disappointed" with how long it has taken to find the right direction for the franchise.

"I think we, in retrospect, wasted a lot of time and money chasing down some creative alleys that turned out to be dead ends." — Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two CEO

What Went Wrong?

BioShock 4 has been in development at Cloud Chamber — the studio Take-Two founded specifically to make the game — since 2019. That is over seven years of work for a game without a release date, a proper reveal, or any real public-facing progress.

Zelnick's comments suggest the team went through multiple creative restarts, pursuing directions that ultimately did not pan out. The BioShock series is known for its deeply layered world-building — Rapture and Columbia are some of the most meticulously realized environments in gaming — so finding a concept that can live up to that legacy is genuinely hard work.

The upside: Rod Fergusson, best known for his work on Gears of War and leading Diablo IV at Blizzard, has taken over the project. And Zelnick says that change is making a real difference.

The Cautiously Good News

Despite the rough history, Zelnick is not hitting the panic button. He says he is "feeling a lot better" about where BioShock 4 stands now compared to its lowest points.

Fergusson has a proven track record with troubled AAA games — Diablo IV had its own turbulent development and shipped to massive commercial success. If anyone can steer BioShock 4 back on track, he is a strong candidate.

That said, do not expect an announcement anytime soon. The game has no release window, and based on how guarded Take-Two has been, a full reveal still looks like at least a couple years out.

Why This Matters to Fans

BioShock is one of gaming's most beloved franchises. BioShock Infinite launched back in 2013 — meaning by the time BioShock 4 ships, fans could be looking at a gap of fifteen years or more between mainline entries. The pressure on this game to deliver is enormous.

Zelnick's candor is at least a sign that Take-Two knows the clock is ticking and is not proud of the delay. Whether that self-awareness translates into a great final product is another question entirely. For now, BioShock 4 remains one of gaming's biggest unknowns — and the wait continues.
