007 First Light Drops May 27 — IO Interactive's Bond Arrives
IO Interactive's James Bond origin story game 007 First Light launches May 27 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S — here's everything to know before it drops.

If you've been looking for something to play while waiting for GTA 6 to drop, IO Interactive just reminded everyone they've got something big coming — and it's only days away. 007 First Light launches on May 27 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, and after years of anticipation, Bond fans and action game lovers are about to find out if the Hitman studio can truly deliver on the spy fantasy.
Who's Behind It — and Why That Matters
IO Interactive isn't some random studio that snagged a license. These are the people behind the modern Hitman trilogy — some of the most refined stealth-action games ever made. That pedigree matters a lot here.
Agent 47 was a methodical, cold professional. Bond is something different — more charismatic, more reckless, driven by instinct as much as training. Getting that shift right is the real challenge, and IO has spent years figuring out how to make it feel authentic rather than like Hitman with a tuxedo slapped on it.
An Original Story — Bond Before the Legend
This isn't a licensed retelling of a film. IO Interactive is telling an entirely original story — specifically, Bond's origin. You're playing a young 007 before he became the legend. The license to kill is new. The confidence is still being earned.
Gameplay focuses on a mix of stealth, action, and dialogue-driven problem solving. IO has talked about giving players real choices in how they handle situations — talk your way through, go in quiet, or go in loud. The Bond fantasy has always been about being the smartest person in the room, and that's apparently baked into how missions are designed.
The game spans multiple exotic locations (naturally), and gadgets are front and center — both in the story and in your toolkit during missions.
Platforms and Launch Date
- PC (Steam and Epic Games Store)
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X/S
- Launch date: May 27, 2026
No last-gen versions. IO Interactive is building exclusively for current hardware, which means the environments and stealth AI should live up to the ambition — no compromises for older consoles dragging things down.
Years in the Making
IO Interactive announced they'd acquired the James Bond game rights back in 2020. That's six years of development — a long time, but arguably necessary for a license this big. The Hitman trilogy took years to reach its full potential too, with the World of Assassination format only completing in 2023.
The studio went independent from Square Enix in 2017 specifically to pursue passion projects like this. Their whole creative identity as a studio has been quietly building toward something they genuinely care about — and that kind of ownership tends to produce better games.
Should You Be Excited?
If you like stealth-action games with strong writing: almost certainly yes. IO Interactive has earned that trust.
If you're a Bond purist: it depends on how attached you are to specific actors or film storylines. This is a completely original take, which is freeing — but also means there's no nostalgia safety net to fall back on.
If you're just looking for a polished, interesting game to play alongside or right after GTA 6 drops: this looks like exactly that. May 27 is close. Worth checking your storefront of choice for preload availability if you want to jump in at launch.
